DCC Blog Hop: Decoupage with Diamond Art @ Leisure Arts

I wanted to share a project that was featured in January at the Creativation Show in Pheonix, Arizona.  This project was made with Leisure Arts Diamond Art product to show as a sample for the show.  When using Diamond Art it is very important to seal the project when you are done to keep all the diamonds in place.  As a Brand Ambassador for Beacon, my go-to product is Beacons Fast Finish Decoupage.  It is not like any other product of its kind, it's a liquid instead of a pasty/thicker texture allowing you to get in small areas, no brush marks, and even distribution.  For Diamond Art, this is perfect as it runs down into the crevices and seals the diamonds wonderfully.

This was a 24" x 12" canvas that I applied the finished Diamond Art Elephant and adhered to the painted canvas. I added some faux greenery to make it look like the elephant was coming out of the jungle.  Finishing touches included Prima Marketing, Inc. flowers, and an interesting piece of wood.

 

Pour the decoupage all over the Diamond Art piece and spread around with a brush, let dry.

Makes a wall hanging with a plethora of fun feathers, chipboard and molds!

Yes, I finally got a chance to play with {a vintage girl} chipboard, Lisa Kettel Designs and the fabulous Expo International to create this 8" x 10" canvas that features a dress form to showcase at Creative Inkling Retailer in Hatboro, Pennsylvania.  I just could not stop with all the chipboard, molds and the unbelievable trims from Expo International. 

It felt so good to get my mojo on, with a new manufacturing company, {a vintage girl}, designing new products every day plus the two businesses I already own, playing tournament pool and just life in general, it's hard to find a moment to be creative.   This entire project was over two days with each day being at 1 am in the morning. 

That is when the mojo hit, and you have to listen!

It's Official! Press Release: Manneqart Competition Winners and Awards Banquet

In January 2018, I attended an art retreat with Jen Cushman in beautiful Southern California at Pom Intra's (Prima Marketing) stunning home.  It was an amazing 5-day retreat with unbelievable women pouring out our creative hearts with our hands.

At this retreat, I met Patti Euler, owner of the infamous Queens Ink in Savage, Maryland. During our time together she told me about Manneqart because of the paper dresses that I create.  I could not believe what I was hearing, I found my tribe.   I was asked to join the competition and set to work on my project.  7 months later I flew to Maryland to teach at Patti's store and participate in the competition.

Spending the time we had at the Manneqart facility, Lee Andersen taking the time to create a cowl for the second model, all the hundreds of bolts of fabric, it was an amazing experience. The dress ended up being modeled by two beautiful young women, it took hours to get them into it and out of it, but it was so much fun.  I loved being in that environment, I can't wait until next year.   Thank you again, Patti for inviting me and in helping me to find my tribe, I did not know there were other people out there like me.  I am so happy to have won two awards and am humbled by the whole experience.

Now to get started on next year, and how do I outdo myself?

ManneqART Announces 2018 Competition Winners

Awards to be Presented at the December 9 Awards Reception at Historic Savage Mill, Maryland
 

(Laurel, MD)  November 15, 2018 – ManneqART, an international arts and education non-profit, today announced the winners of its 2018 (Sixth Annual) national Sculptural Artworks Competition.       54 artworks were submitted to this year’s competition which, since 2013, has received more than 300 entries.  This year’s Competition featured themes of fantasy, love, metro and mechanical and also included a Bra Art Competition which received 15 entries.  Winners were selected by a team of six expert judges who used the criteria of originality, craftsmanship and adherence to theme in making their decisions.  Theme winners each receive a $1000 cash award. 

This year, the judges chose NOT to select an overall Master Award winner, deciding instead to select two Fantasy Theme Award winners because of the large number of Fantasy Theme entries received. The winners are Bloom by artist Meg Schapp of Potomac, MD and Ethereal Fairy by artist Candy Rosenberg of Grants Pass, OR. Ethereal Fairy receives the 2018 Innolect Corp. Growing Leaders Award. Love Theme Award—The Love of the Freed Family, a collaboration by members of the Freed family of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Florida, honors the 94th birthday of the family matriarch, Helen Adams Freed.  At a family reunion in July, 32 family members each created a unique flower and all 32 were incorporated into a wearable sculpture by ManneqART volunteer artists Lexi Sands and Sherry Kirn.

Mechanical Theme Award—Untethered by Baltimore artist Stacy Levy

Bra Art Competition winner is Cuckoo Cups by artist Grace DuVal  of Chicago. This artwork was previously shown at the 2016 World of Wearable Art Competition in New Zealand. 

Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to create unique sculptural artworks from a variety of  materials for the ManneqART Competition.  The artworks must be wearable without harming the model and must fit through a typical doorway. And, they must be durable enough to be worn at least 10 times without visible damage.  Through workshops and one on one mentoring, emerging artists are taught critical skills and methods needed to produce amazing artworks.  In addition to theme awards, ManneqART each year presents Emerging Artist Awards supported this year by perennial sponsors Chris and George Bachrach.   The 2018 Competition winners are:

College Award ($500) Movie Slides by artist Lacy DeJordy of Stevenson University in Baltimore, MD   
High School Award ($300) Frozen Light by Southern High School in Harwood, MD.
Middle/Elementary School Award ($200) Kinder Garden by beginning artists attending a 2018 ‘Makers Fair’ in Columbia, MD. 

ManneqART recently presented all this year’s winning artworks at a two-week exhibit sponsored and hosted by The Mall in Columbia.   ManneqART routinely exhibits sculptural artworks at venues in and around Howard County and is planning to make artworks available at more locations in 2019. 

ManneqART's 2018 Awards Reception is scheduled for Sunday, December 9, 5-8 PM at the new ManneqART exhibition in the New Weave Building at Historic Savage Mill.  Plan to attend this fun event featuring this year's winning artworks on live models.  Bring your friends and relatives.  Light snacks and beverages will be offered.

The Story Behind the Printers Tray Album and an Introduction to the "A Vintage Girl" brand.

Introducing "A Vintage Girl," a vintage brand of crafty goodness including chipboard albums, chipboard embellishments and stencils to start.  All our products have a vintage style with some sprinkles of Steampunk.  We will have our official launch in late October, so keep an eye out. 

One of my chipboard albums, The Printers Tray, will be featured at Scrapbooking Fairies in Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada on September 29th is my all time favorite. As those that know me, know that I am truly a vintage girl at heart and at the center of that heart is a love for old Printers Trays.  I own one cabinet that is buried deep in storage, that I had to save for quite some time to buy. It was missing two drawers but that's ok, I have about 12 drawers that I have picked up over the years. They are spendy little devils, but when I see them I cannot resist.  All the little areas to put little things in like keys, old matchbooks, anything small really.

Six years ago, I was given the opportunity to create chipboard albums with Michele Parish of Want2Scrap.com.  Naturally, I did a gear album, then a steampunk one and then THE PRINTERS TRAY.  This was tricky because we needed to create the little lip on the long edge.  And then what would we put inside, so the embellishment sheet was born.  It had pieces and words that fit perfectly in the cutouts on the cover.  Scissors, windows, words, buttons and other fun items.  This is my most favorite album and such fun to have an album that is of one of my most prized possessions at home.

We are now offering them under my own brand, "A Vintage Girl" that features chipboard albums, chipboard embellishments, and stencils.  Working on a few other ventures including a paper collection and home decor.  Keep an eye out, we are super busy!

The Making of A Full Size Art Dress-Phase One

At the AFCI show, formerly Craft & Hobby Association, I was commissioned to create a Vintage Steampunk Inspired Dress made from Prima Marketing, Inc. products.  This was a challenge as I had not made a full-size dress since 2012 for the Chicago CHA show.  When you get a message from Pom Intra, the owner of Prima, asking you to create a full-size dress for the upcoming show...you don't say NO, you say Hell Yes!  Especially since your entire 10 years crafting career, your dream has been to work with Prima.

With only months until the show, we got product ordered and delivered.  Not knowing the exact plan but have some sketched ideas you start digging through what you got and start to get to work.  About a third of the way in, I get another message.  Pom wants it to be a wedding dress.  Hmmm, well throws a whole other element into the piece but alas, I agree.  This dress took a total of 375 hours.  Now mind you I own a shipping store that I work at full time, so this was constructed in my store in between customers, nights and weekends in less than 3 months.  

I had never shown or shared my process before, sure I post sneak peeks and bits and pieces to keep your interest, but honestly, it should not be shown in its entirety until the show., this give the show attendees the exclusive first look at it.  However, I get asked a lot about the process and because this was going to be such an epic project we decided to share the process.  It was fun to get feedback along the way.  Now I am putting it into a full blog series so you can see the entire process from start to finish.  

First things first, PAPER!  You have to punch out paper, hours and hours of punching!  This dress has approximately 1100 punched pieces and each piece must be inked all the way around the edges.  Then adhered one at a time starting from the bottom and working your way up.  Fiskars was a sponsor and provided scissors, mat and several punches including the flag punch used on the dress.  We used a beautiful, expensive and real dressmakers dress form with wrought iron cage and stand with wheels.

Once the dress is complete.  Then we start the decoupaged corset.   I cover a good portion of the dress form, this is because I am not quite sure how long I am going to make it yet.

Once I have done layers of the decoupaged layers, I use a pen to make the center line then cut it.  Being very careful not to cut the actual dress form.

I start marking where I think I want to cut the corset down to.

I cut where I want it to be the final main shape of the corset.



Put it back on the mannequin to ensure a good fit.

Fall Decor with Etchall® Dip n' Etch

I was really excited to receive the Etchall® Dip n' Etch as my mind was racing with what I could do with it.  I perused our local dollar store and found some super cute bottles and wanted to make them into Fall decor for the table.  They were a perfect match for this product. The Dip n' Etch is so amazingly easy that I kind of felt guilty.  I felt like it should be harder to get this amazing finish, but I quickly stopped complaining.

  I etched these two bottles 2/3 of the way and then added canvas, flowers, and embellies to give it a fall look.

 

I apologize for the bit darker than normal photographs but I did the main etching at home, I wanted my family to see what I was making.  There are not very many steps to this as it is so very easy to do but I wanted to share this.  Gather your supplies.  Read the instructions on the Etchall product container.

 

I poured the correct amount of Dip n' Etch liquid and dipped it into the container as instructed.  Held it there for 15 minutes, I put a heavy object on top to keep the bottle from rising out of the liquid.

And this was the amazing result:




Once I was able to get back in the studio, I cut strips of a Canvas Corp Brands canvas sheet, added May Arts Jute Ribbon, and some beautiful Prima flowers and beads to complete the look.

When I took these bottles out to take photos, I was amazed how the blended in with the Fall Foliage, you can barely see them.

Designer Crafts Connection: Alumilite: Casting Molds

 
Molds and Casts a Fun Pendant

This month the Designer Crafts Connection team worked with Amazing Casting Products to create with their amazing casting resin, dyes, and Alumidust.  I had a brand new Prima mold sitting on my desk screaming for attention, so I knew just what I was going to do. I had not used many molds in my time so it was a little new to me.  After waiting overnight I was pretty excited to see how they came out, my jaw was on the floor, needless to say.  So let me show you what I did and how I did it!

First things first, gather your supplies.  

 

Add 10-15 drops of the dye into the already mixed resin to get the black color.

.

Mix very well

Pour into the mold.  I used a popsicle stick so that I can control the amount that goes into each mold.

On two of the molds I dusted the inside with the Alumidust first and this is the stunning result.



This is how it looks coming out the mold.  I am floored at how beautiful the color is.  As I am making these I am not sure which one I am going to use until the end.

 
I chose this particular one that goes beautifully with a pair of silver metal wings from Prima Marketing, Inc and attached some fun May Arts Ribbon to finish off the necklace.

 

This is a second pendant that I am now working on.  I just love the look of the Alumidust when applied first in the mold before pouring the resin.  It is stunning!

Skull Print using Encaustic Wax: Prima, Finnabair and DecoArt

Does a Deep Wax Skull Print

If you follow me you will know that I am delving into the art of Encaustic wax (youtube this, prepare to be amazed) and had this awesome skull digital print and with Halloween just around the corner, well here you have it!  This was a lot of fun to make and has so many layers.  I love how the wax makes it look even spookier.

I am using the digital print, DecoArt Americana Matte Black paint, a cut piece of cardboard.  I paint the background as the print is just slightly smaller than the cardboard piece.  After the paint dries, adhere the print to the cardboard.  Be sure that you use an adhesive that will cover the entire surface otherwise you will get raised areas like I did.

 

Start adding the Encaustic wax and fuse in between the layers.  Do this until you get the look you want.  I then added a red tinted wax around the edges and fused.

I added some carved lines to later enhance and carved out the area of the eyes and teeth to show dimension.  Fuse it to melt the edges so they are no so sharp.

Using a burnt umber pigment stick rub where the carved lines are.  Then wipe off with a paper towel, then a baby wipe to take off all the excess.

I added Prima Marketing, Inc. flowers and leaves to recreate the headpiece.  I quickly decided that I wanted it to have a rust effect and painted Finnibair Rust Paste over the flowers.

Creativation 2017...Dress Forms and More!

The Creativation 2017 show was a great experience.  It was held in Phoenix, Arizona this year instead of the usual Anaheim, California location.  I did miss Disneyland and knowing what, where and how much things were.  My greatest hope was to have some warmth and sunshine and unfortunately, I was disappointed in that area.  It was rainy and overcast as well as cold nearly the entire week I was there.  On a super shoestring budget, Phoenix hotels are very pricey so I will have to work on that next year and do more searching for lower rate rooms and transportation to get to the store and back.  But overall, it was a good experience.

At this years show I had the honor to create my 15th dress form for the Graphic45 booth and this year she was no normal dress....she towered at over 6 foot tall.  I knew I needed to go big this year and I hope that I did not disappoint.  She spent the first two days in the Graphic45 booth showing off the "Portrait of A Lady" paper collection, then when we had some shipping snafus come up as I was leaving the show on Sunday, Fiskars was nice enough to babysit her for the last day of the show and ship her home later.  The butterflies that were punched out for the dress were Fiskars punch, so wanted a chance to show this off to the show goers and see what kind of cool projects can be made!  Keep an eye out for next year, I am going even bigger!  Thank you to Graphic45, Canvas Corp Brands: 7Gypsies, Prima Marketing, Charity Wings, Beacon Adhesives and Fiskars for sponsoring me for this show.

Additionally, I created a small version of Lady Butterfly for the Canvas Corp Brands: 7 Gypsies booth.  She was stowed away atop of a shelf for the show.

The final and a very special project was done for Elena Etcheverry of Charity Wings.  Each year for a number of years, Elena has had wings designed for her to wear at the show.  I even created a paper dress to match wings one year.  This year, it was time to do something different.  We put those wings on a crown of beautiful Prima flowers with natural feathers and punched butterflies throughout to give it the winged theme.  She was so beautiful and I was honored to create it for her!  Thank you Prima Marketing for sponsoring this project.
